The members of Beach Day were born in the wrong decade. Heavily influenced by 1960s and 70s girl groups like The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las, the band's sound is dreamy pop that makes you want to close your eyes and lie on the sand for hours. But don't think they're all summery, superficial pop songs. Kimmy Drake, Beach Day's lead singer, describes their new album Trip Trap Attack (out tomorrow!) as "sunny" but also "a little dark."
Raised in Hollywood, Florida, Drake counts the beach as a major influence not just on her music, but on her style as well. "Where we live it’s super-sunny and warm all the time, so I pretty much live in jean shorts," says Drake. "That’s the standard for me every day." Her natural style also transfers to the stage when the band performs. "I wear jean shorts on stage, too, but I dress them up a bit. I wear black stockings with them and I make it look clean and put-together. I’ll wear tops with jean shorts and stockings and then, like, black oxfords."
Drake, whose dark-haired beauty brings to mind New Girl's Hannah Simone, mixed perhaps with a pinch of Naomi Campbell—has her own personal style that stems from a mix of beachy-retro and casual-with-an-edge brands. "I like to shop vintage sometimes, and if I go to more mainstream places I definitely shop at Urban Outfitters. I love Quiksilver—they’re great. I would love one of everything from Quiksilver! The Vans store has really, really awesome girls' stuff. I went to a Vans store a little while ago on tour and bought four shirts. I love them."
