Fruitvale Station's Breakout Star Knows a Thing or Two About Ladylike Style

Our Cannes red carpet roundup primarily featured the established celebs in attendance—and with stars like Kristen Stewart, Jessica Chastain and Emma Roberts turning up in some amazing gowns, who can blame us?  But let's take a moment to talk about Melonie Diaz's red carpet look at the festival—it's prim, proper and polka-dotted, and we really dig it. The New York native appears in the buzzy Fruitvale Station, out tomorrow, which won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance and is now generating Oscar buzz. Starring newcomer Michael B. Jordan in the leading role, the film is based on the true story of Oscar Grant, a young man who was fatally shot by a BART police officer in Oakland, CA—even though he was unarmed at the time. Diaz, whom you may recognize from indie hits like A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006) and Be Kind Rewind (2008), plays Sophina, Grant's girlfriend.

Diaz's role may be intense—but with its contrast collar and playful bow, the vintage Moschino she sported at Cannes is all fun. Ladylike style's been big news for several seasons running, and Diaz's buttoned-up yet whimsical dress is a perfect example of how to wear the trend. Click through to shop some similar looks.
