Ashlee Simpson On Modeling for Sister Jessica's Clothing Line—And Being Banned From Her Shoe Wardrobe
Ashlee Simpson, singer and clothing designer, is sitting on the seventh floor balcony of the Thompson LES Hotel. She is perched on a patio couch surrounded by her family and friends overlooking downtown New York City while dance music pumps through the speakers. From afar, it would seem as though the star's casually catching up with loved ones over drinks; in fact, she is actually there to host the launch of her older sister Jessica's Fall 2013 collection (Ashlee stepped in as the face of the campaign while Jessica was pregnant with her second child, Ace). The entire Jessica Simpson empire is a family affair—Ashlee designs the tween line, Jessica Simpson Girls, and their mother Tina also contributes. Dressed in a Grecian-style teal maxi dress (one of her sister's creations, naturally) teamed with funky accessories, the "La La" singer looks like a modern-day flower child. "I love the '70s," she explained. "I love that free, kind of easy-going feeling."
The fall collection has an Americana bohemian theme, and is sprinkled with pieces that walk the line between tough and sweet, like a denim jacket with leather sleeves paired over a gold sequined pullover and a slouchy sweater with studded shoulder details. These pieces please Ashlee, who's more of a style risk-taker than her sister. "It has a little bit of an edge to it, which is really nice for me," she told us. Though the sisters' personal styles differ, Ashlee and Jessica do still swipe from each other's closets—that is, except when it comes to what Jessica is arguably most famous for: her footwear. "Jessica’s wardrobe is amazing. I’m not allowed to wear her shoes. I’ve been banned!"
As for Ashlee's favorite piece from her sister's line? The maroon dress pictured above. "I was obsessed with that dress. The color is amazing," she gushed. And from the tween collection she designs? "We have the cutest little shirts. Those are always fun."
When she isn't modeling or chasing after her son, Bronx, Ashlee swaps her contemporary hippie look for menswear. "When I get home I’m like, okay, I want to put men’s pants on with heels. I’m a wear-my-boyfriend’s-clothes kind of girl."
