This Singer-Songwriter Can't Go On Tour Without Her Grandfather's Bolo Tie

With plenty of piano and sweet, husky vocals, Jillette Johnson’s music is an indie mix of soul and pop. Her debut album Water in a Whale came in at number 12 on the iTunes chart and if her single "Cameron" is any indication, we can expect a lot more success from the New York singer-songwriter. "Cameron," a song about embracing who you are and what you love, explores the struggles of a young transgender boy (check out the track's video and just try not to be moved). Water in a Whale expands on Johnson's first EP, Whiskey & Frosting, and includes another empowering, take-no-prisoners anthem called "Torpedo," along with eight brand new tracks.

In her everyday life, Johnson's personal style is romantic with an edge. In her music video for "Pauvre Coeur," for instance, she wears a floor-length, backless blush-colored gown mixed with a chunky necklace for a play on texture. Whether she's pairing florals with dark lace tights or doing her hair in soft waves and wearing a leather jacket, this talented musician exemplifies beauty with an attitude.

In the slideshow above, Johnson (who's just kicked off her co-headlining tour with alternative rock band Satellite) shares the items she absolutely needs while on tour, including everything from a limited-edition lipstick (that may just throw her into a full-blown identity crisis if it ever disappears from shelves), to her grandfather's bolo tie. Of course, some of her favorite items aren't for sale—most notably her crew's mascot. "My tour manager and I are obsessed with dogs, but touring with one is probably the worst idea that ever was, so we have a stuffed animal pup named Bones, and he sits right between us while we drive," she says.
