The Civil Wars' Leading Lady Talks Style-Crushing on Taylor Swift and Finding Inspiration on Instagram
When Adele and Taylor Swift are fans of your music, you must be doing something right. Meet Joy Williams, one half of the three-time Grammy-winning duo The Civil Wars. The group's self-titled sophomore album drops today, and is even better than their critically acclaimed first record, Barton Hollow. And Williams' fashion prowess is just as impressive as her musical chops. Her on-stage uniform is simple, with a dash of drama—she always wears a black, flirty dress and minimal makeup, little more than a bit of winged eyeliner. Her darkly romantic look is a perfect match for the band's hauntingly beautiful music. Their first single off the new album, "The One That Got Away," is a powerful song about regret. "I feel like this new album is very visceral, raw, and even more emotional and honest than what we made with Barton Hollow," she says. "I'm really proud of the way it turned out."
When she's not performing, the country singer's own personal style is more girly. "I try every day to put on at least one article that makes me feel feminine or fun or just feel like the woman that I am. Most days, you'll probably catch me in an Urban Outfitters top and Citizens of Humanity high-rise skinny jeans. I love those. I sort of like clean lines, normally black and white or red. Just really classic colors." And if she could splurge on anything, it'd be shoes. "I’m obsessed with shoes and I try and keep a lid on it, but I really think if money wasn’t an object I’d probably have a room full of them. You can take a pair of really basic jeans and a really basic tank top and put on a pair of beautiful shoes and it becomes something completely its own and has a different attitude."
Williams finds fashion inspiration on Instagram from designers like Nina Ricci, J. Mendel and Stella McCartney. "Who doesn't love them some Stella!?" she laughs. You can see her favorite pair of strappy black and white 3.1 Phillip Lim wedges on her own Instagram, @Joy__Williams.
The singer names her close friend Taylor Swift as another fashion role model. Williams collaborated with the country-pop megastar on the song "Safe and Sound" for The Hunger Games soundtrack and admires her polished style. "I love her fashion and I love her more as a person. She always looks so classy and that’s something that I’ve always really respected about her."
This fall, Williams is looking forward to coats, boots and experimenting with lipstick. "I feel like lip color is just continuing to get more and more fun. You can set an instant mood with a lip color, even if you’re wearing something basic, so I’m looking forward to playing with that in the fall, too. I might just get crazy."
