Best of Brooklyn: The Primary Essentials

"I’m a fanatical list maker, and whenever I see something that piques my interest I write it down, in my notebook, on my phone, everywhere," says Snyder. "I read tons of magazines, and blogs, and try to walk around to new stores, restaurants and museums to just always be on the lookout."

The reason Lauren Snyder chose Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, as the home for her new boho-minimalist shop, The Primary Essentials? There were just so many amazing artisans working in the area. “This part of Brooklyn was missing a good home-and-lifestyle store—and a place to represent a lot of the talent that was happening so close by,” says Snyder, who opened the boutique last fall. Among the earthy wares (from Boerum Hill and elsewhere): Clam Lab ceramics, apothecary-style Jiva Apoha body oil and Caroline Z. Hurley chambray throws guaranteed to add a little bit of Brooklyn cool to any space. And even if you can’t make it to Atlantic Avenue for some brick-and-mortar browsing, the store’s gorgeous site offers an equally irresistible mix of treasures.
