Why Alexander Wang Initially Rejected The Balenciaga Job Offer

As one of the busiest, most in-demand people currently working in fashion, Alexander Wang remarkably still finds time to give back to us mere mortals in the industry. On Tuesday, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) hosted the 30-year-old designer for a discussion with the chairman of Tom Ford, Domenico De Sole. Students were treated to a revealing conversation in which Wang divulged how his 2012 appointment as Balenciaga's creative director came about.

Believe it or not, Wang didn't initially accept the offer when Balenciaga first approached him about filling Nicolas Ghesquière's vacant position; he primarily cited preoccupation with his own New York-based line as the cause for rejection. But the French fashion house wouldn't take no for an answer, instead offering him a tour of its legendary Parisian couture archives—reportedly per the advice of none other than Anna Wintour. As Wang described: "Seeing the archive in person, as a creative person when you see something like that it puts sparks into you," he described. "It kind of just triggered me. It really inspired me to think about it."

And the rest, as they say, is history.
