Why Raf Simons Went To Jennifer Lawrence For Advice

We imagine taking the reigns at any major fashion house would come with a lofty set of anxieties, especially one in the throes of an enormous, international scandal. But now, simply imagine if you had an entire film crew tracking your every move. To wit, Dior and I—the forthcoming documentary capturing Raf Simons' creative process leading up to his debut couture show in July 2012—began filming less than two months after Christian Dior appointed him creative director. Talk about hitting the ground running, huh?

It's understandable, then, why Raf turned to the brand's spotlight-privy campaign star Jennifer Lawrence for advice throughout Dior and I's filming. J-Law, we understand, plays a prominent role in the film as Raf's go-to muse.

"She said she looks at things very technically, when she looks at a film she's in, but it was not the case for me at all," he said. "It's all about emotion. It's not about how it's cut and all that."

When watching the 89-minute film in-full, he described the viewing documentary as a soothing, nearly cathartic experience. "When I saw it, it was very comforting, but also very emotional in a way because you see yourself with all the emotions that come into play in such a moment…including the fear, which was very weird to see coming out of yourself."

He went on to say: "There was an enormous intimacy in the movie, which I think is also present in Dior, in the company. In the building, there was a strong kind of family feel."

Dior and I will open the Tribeca Film Festival on April 17.
