Ryan Gosling Just Emerged From Hiding To Fête His New Movie At Cannes
It's been a rough 15 months without Ryan Gosling and his Adonis-like gaze there to guide us. Following his role in 2013's Gangster Squad, Gosling made a semi-official announcement last March that he was taking a break from acting—and with a break from acting came a break from the public spotlight. It was a real bummer.
But then, something magical happened: Gosling showed up at the Cannes Film Festival (see above) where his directorial debut Lost River premiered today. The film, which stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan and Gosling's lady love Eva Mendes, follows a single mother and her teenage son who discovers a secret underwater town. Cool, no?
Well, as amped as we are that he's made a return to the public eye, many critics aren't necessarily on the same page. Grantland's Wesley Morris, for one, didn't exactly hold back when it came time to disparage the movie on Twitter: "If a $200 haircut and $900 shades were given lots of money to defecate on Detroit, the result would be Ryan Gosling's directing debut." Again, a real bummer.
At any rate, welcome back to civilization, Mr. Gosling!
