His And Hers: 30 Borrowed-From-The-Boys Sweaters To Cozy Up In This Fall
With Labor Day fast approaching, it will be no time at all before the weather starts turning crisp and pumpkin spice lattes again become the flavor of choice. And while I am not ready to break out my L.L.Bean down jacket, I admit I'm eager to drag my chunky sweaters out of storage. To me, a cozy sweater, jeans and booties outfit is basically the equivalent to pajamas, except it's acceptable to wear to the office. Win.
But this season the classic cable-knit sweater will take a twist when it comes to size—like jeans, the more boyfriend the better. Last season, Alexander Wang showed puffy, neon (and even color-changing!) versions, while Tommy Hilfiger stayed true to his Americana roots with ponchos (in size extra-large only, it seemed) and plaid-printed sweaters. But the message remained the same—oversize, boyfriend, two-sizes-too-big sweaters are the outerwear option come fall.
When it comes to shopping for said sweater, why not borrow from the boys? The men's departments of our favorite retailers are a wealth of cable-knit, chunky coolness. Just try and find items marked slim fit for a more form-fitting style, and shop a size or two down from your usual. If shopping in the men's department seems too daunting, or you are too petite for a men's XS, the women's department has a variety of options. Look for styles marked oversized or boyfriend for a loose-fitting look, and buy a size or two up.
No matter which department you choose to shop, take care to style said boyfriend sweater in a way that doens't make you look, well, frumpy. Try it with your favorite pair of skinny jeans, or even a contrasting texture, like leather. A sleek mini skirt and booties also does the trick!
