Tying on one of these old-school, dinner-jacket-style sashes works remarkably well for both day (with jeans and a washed-cotton shirt) and night (with a flouncy dress, like the one shown here). As a rule of thumb, avoid pairing it with black pants or a black jacket—too tuxedolike. Better yet, choose one that's quite untraditional, like brown, cobalt blue satin, or silver leather.
