Pairing two pieces this roomy can make for a perfect, breezy combination—if you get the proportions right.

Putting it together:

  • Since both items have a slightly boxy shape, it's key to show off a little skin. Look for tops that are short-sleeved or sleeveless, and for skirts that hit at least an inch or two above the knee.
  • Smocks with a fitted yoke at the top or a narrow cut through the shoulders are the most flattering—they'll give you a needed bit of definition.
  • Skirts should have a silhouette with some volume—nothing too clingy. Pick soft cottons for a more casual look, or you can get a fancier effect with lightweight brocade.
