readers ask: dear lucky
Q: When you're over 40, how short can dresses and shorts be?
A: An at-least-close-to-40 makeup artist I know wore a tiny silk mini jumpsuit (sleeveless, too, btw) to her big presentation the other day—and she looked beyond fantastic. What you can wear—despite the 700,000 magazine articles that insist otherwise—depends only on your body and your mind. Sixty-year-olds with great legs should most definitely wear short skirts! (Hello, Tina Turner!) If your crow’s-feet are bugging you, why would you not distract with a toned thigh? Conversely, if you’re 15 and you don’t love the way you look in a mini, don’t force it. I can’t resist those articles either; I gobble them down like piles of candy, but then I’m always like, Oh, but I love that shoe they gave the 20-year-olds! And what does it say about me that I want the dress they’re reserving for the “over 70” ladies? It’s human nature to crave a rule, but the reality is, Demi Moore and her daughters can all share clothes. Full stop.
