Readers Ask: Dear Lucky About Preventing Blow-Dry Frizz

Q: I rarely blow-dry my hair, but when I do it ends up looking frizzy. What is the one tip/product I could use to avoid this? I use a normal blow dryer, plus a glossing serum that I put on my hair while it is damp.

A: The best blow-dry in my opinion involves little or no blow dryer. First go in with a frizz-tamping serum like John Frieda Frizz-Ease. Then let your hair air-dry almost all the way. (If you're in a rush, use a blow dryer, but don't worry so much about styling. Just get it to almost-dry.) Then use either a flat iron, a large-barrel curling iron or both. The iron (or irons) will give you the blow-dry polish you're looking for without the extra frizz, not to mention all the elbow grease a good blow-dry takes.

That was the Cliff's Notes answer; for the real deal, I went to the blindingly handsome Andy LeCompte (think Zach Braff but a thousand million times cuter—which is hard to do; what's not to love about Zach Braff?), and he said something simple but true: "People always want to know why their hair looks so much better after they get a salon blow-dry.* Some of it's the fact that I have a lot more practice doing blow-dries than you do, but most of it is the time I spend. If you spent as much time as your stylist does blow-drying your hair, it would look a lot better. Really."

To cheat a little, Mr. LeCompte says to put in something called Velvet Amplifier (from Wella) while your hair's still damp. "It's the perfect primer—it fights frizz but it's matte, so it doesn't weigh down your hair."

*By "people," I should note, Mr. LeCompte might or might not be referring to Madonna, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Richie or essentially any gorgeous-haired female celeb you can think of.
