readers ask: dear lucky about wearing white to a wedding

Q: Can you wear white to a wedding? Is it rude because it upstages the bride? —Laura

Heathcliff O'Malley/Rex/Rex USA

A: Dear Laura,
Many people have asked this question. And though we live in an anything-goes world, the answer has always been and remains: No. And: Yes, it does. Whether the bride cares or not, wearing white to a wedding makes you look inconsiderate at best and, at worst, hideously vain in insisting on choosing your outfit over hers. Give it up for one day! The exception would of course be the all-white wedding. Or if Truman Capote invites you to his Black and White Wedding. Or if your soon-to-be-royal sister says, “You know? You have got the best-looking rear end in Christendom, and I want every available man on the planet to know it. Would you mind wearing this formfitting white silk number to my wedding, please?”
