Dear Lucky: Where can I find the perfect knee-high boots?

Q: I want to wear the new knee-high boots, but my calves are not super string-bean skinny. Do they make wider-calf versions? —Gabrielle

Leather boots, $280, ariat.com

A: Dear Gabrielle,

They do! Zappos.com, in fact, devotes an entire section of its site to wide-calf-appropriate boots; so does endless.com. Accessories director Julia Kalachnikoff says if you’re shopping in a store, look for elastic panels within the boots’ structure, multiple buckles and/or zippers. “Don’t count on stretching the actual leather,” she warns. “That can end up ruining the finish and not looking good at all.” Riding boots—a huge part of the to-the-knee trend for fall—can be custom-ordered to fit your calves exactly, says Julia, who loves ariat.com: “Remember that they’re proper riding boots—they can be difficult to break in, but you’ll have them forever.”
