How-to (Fit)

Winter Coats

How to fit a winter coat
Michael Waring
Four tips to getting the perfect winter coat with that just-right fit.
1. The key to a perfect fit is arm seams that hit exactly at the edge of your shoulders—you should be able to cross your hands over your chest comfortably.

2. In damper climates, look for waterproof fabrics—100 percent wool can lose its shape and/or get that damp-dog smell when wet.

3. Try it on with your bulkiest sweater and your favorite shoulder bag. If the sweater looks lumpy under the coat or the bag doesn't fit over your arm, this isn't the one for you.

4. Fancier coats look best when they are long enough to cover the skirt or dress underneath, so try those styles with the longest skirt you plan to wear them with.
