Jan. 2008: Carolyn McCandlish

does this outfit work?

january 2008

Carolyn McCandlish, 22, featured in our January "Does This Outfit Work?" story, relies on cozy sheepskin boots to get through New York winters, but she's always felt they emphasized how petite she is. So here's what we did to help her out:

• Switched her flat, mid-calf boots for a wedge style that rises to just about the knee.

• Swapped her hip-length, cable-knit sweater for a slightly longer, more streamlined one.

"We needed to elongate her figure," says fashion news director Jen Ford. "The wedge boots give her slightly longer legs yet are as easy to walk in as her old flats. And adding a sweater that hits the top of her thighs gives the illusion of a longer upper body, too."

Carolyn's reaction: "I wanted to look put-together even when I'm just running around the city. I feel taller, slimmer, and—best of all—I'm still comfortable."
