My Favorite TV Commercial Ever and Gap's New Premium Denim

gap.premium.white.jpgYesterday a friend of mine sent me a link to the Gap commercial we were both obsessed with years ago starring the ridiculously cute ballet dancer Will Kemp. Watch it. For real—is he not one of the most crush-worthy guys ever?? The same friend had also emailed me to rave about their just-launched premium denim line. I haven't checked it out yet myself, but she says the skinny jeans are the best she's ever tried, and are indeed leg-lengthening and butt-lifting as Gap's website claims. They're $69.50 and come in some really good washes, like charcoal, distressed white, and my usual go-to indigo. I'm making a run to the store this week for a closer look. For those of you out there who beat me to them, I'm curious to hear what you think too.

Mining The Sale: Virginia Johnson

2009_08_viriginiajohnson.jpg
Many of you know I'm a huge fan of Virginia Johnson's gauze wool shawls—I pretty much never leave the house without one. I just noticed that a bunch of them are half off on her site, and in the product descriptions it says that the material she used this season is even softer than it's been in the past, making them that much more tempting. I love it in smoky purple floral, and also the apricot version with a cool, half-botanical, half-geometric print. Both are now $97. The totes and cosmetics cases also half off. For gifting purposes, I suggest stocking up on toiletry bags like this one, marked down to $16.

Pretend Money's No Object: What's Your Fashion Fantasy Piece?

goldengoose.boots.jpgSurfing lagarconne.com last night I came across the Golden Goose boots I've been coveting forever. They're a classic, elegant equestrian style with a rock and roll spin, with leather straps, metal buckles, and a gorgeously distressed finish. They're completely handmade, and the craftsmanship is beyond exquisite. At $1274 they're also ludicrously expensive, and as much as I love to daydream about all the outfits I'd pair them with (one of my favorites involves an exotic embroidered white dress and shrunken denim jacket), and even though I know I'd wear them for years and years if I won the lottery and actually sprang for them, at that price they'll probably never be anything more than a fantasy for me.

So anyway. Indulge me. I want to know: money and all reason aside, if you could add anything to your closet what would it be?

Mining The Sale: Opening Ceremony

oc1_0820.jpgOn Opening Ceremony's site just now I was surprised to find they still have a lot of spring stuff that's majorly on sale. Among the deals is this Vena Cava dress covered with hand-stitched metallic pyramids and beads. This is one of those pieces you're guaranteed to rack up compliments on every time you wear it, and it's been reduced from $750 to $225—a totally justifiable price for something so beautifully detailed and special. I'm also loving the sporty but sophisticated shawl collar anorak (I'd use this to add some edge to a floaty slipdress underneath—now $198 from $660) and this sweet soft pink knit shift with a banded skirt, both by the store's house label ($87, was $290). Also not worth missing: this pouffy, awesomely tutu-like mini by Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair ($95, was $315).

Finally, A City Appropriate, Super Cozy Shearling Boot

No.6.aviatorboot.jpgYears ago I succumbed to the exceptional warmth and comfort of Ugg boots. I'm a huge wimp about cold weather, and in the dead of winter there are few things that can relieve that icy, chilly feeling as satisfyingly. I love them, but really just for padding around the house or running down the block to the closest bodega—I find them too casual and beachy (growing up in San Diego, all the surfers wore these) for day-to-day. This year, I have my eye on No. 6's Aviator Shearling Boots. This knee high style is also completely lined in shearling (like Uggs, you can slip them on barefoot), and the slim shaft, cool, crackly leather, and clog heel add up to a much more sleek look. They're water-repellent too, so you don't have to worry about taking them out in the slush. Pair them with a fisherman's sweater and skinny jeans for weekends, or for a night out, try a swingy wool dress and tights.

Come Find Me At Rugby!

I'm psyched to announce I'll be guest blogging at Rugby's site for the rest of this week! Click here to check out a link to my top five fall must-haves, and be sure to circle back, as I'll be updating daily. Later in the week I investigate how to pull off a beret, with pointers from Lucky's accessories editor Melissa Lum, a frequent (and flawless) beret wearer herself. Enjoy!

Celeb Trend In The Making: Lolita Glasses

2009_08_heartshapedsunglasses.jpg

I just saw this picture of Drew Barrymore wearing bubblegum pink heart shaped sunglasses, something I might normally be completely appalled by and yet she manages to look so cute and fresh and happy I can't help but approve. Then I remembered that Nicole Richie was also spotted in an identical-looking red pair, also improbably adorable, and then there's Katy Perry, who turned hers into spectacles. Now I'm wondering if we're going to be seeing Valentine-ish Lolita glasses everywhere. I'm not convinced I quite have the joie de vivre to pull them off, but for those who're ready to jump on the trend, there's a range of inexpensive options in different colors available here.

40 Percent Off At BestowBoutique.com

2009_08_bestowboutique.jpg
Gift shopping site bestowboutique.com is taking 40 percent off everything in their "for the bride" section from now through October 15th. Even if you're not in the market for the soon-to-be-married, it's still a really good sale, for universally useful things like this Marseilles soap delicates wash (I'd almost just buy it for the packaging, though I've actually tried it and the stuff is great), DL & Co's gorgeous, exotic-scented candles, and this cheeky, cute embroidered silk sleep mask. There's no coupon code to enter—the discount will be applied at checkout.

A Stripes Epidemic at Lucky HQ and The Best $15 Tee Ever

2009_08_stripedshirts.jpg
I don't know what it is with us Lucky girls and stripes. It's truly an office-wide obsession, and none of us can get enough! I definitely share Anne's love of striped dresses, and am equally hooked on nautical, French-looking tees. Just now at Urban Outfitters I found another one to add to my collection: BDG's Boatneck Sailor Stripe Top. It comes in the essential cream and black, as well as cream and red (I'm all about sticking to classic colors when it comes to these), and the fit is nice and relaxed. Since the price has been slashed to $14.99, I'm thinking about snapping up the pair and making them my uniform for the rest of the summer.

My Must-Have Sweater For Fall

Jcrew.maya.cardigan.jpgA couple nights ago at a cocktail party someone commented on how the days are already starting to get shorter—summer always passes by way too fast, and the thought of letting go of the season always depresses me to no end. Since then I've been trying to remind myself of all the things I love about autumn, and have gotten as far as apples and sweater dressing. The latter lead me to poke around on J. Crew's site for inspiration, and I've totally fallen for this Maya cardigan. At first glance it's a straightforward, slim cut knit, but look closer and you'll see how the fabric gathers ever so subtly at the front placket, a detail that's at once arty, feminine, and high fashion. It's made of their merino wool, which is great for it's smooth, lightweight feel and lack of pilling, and comes in the prettiest shade of rose-tinged, goes-with-everything nude.
